Device Closures of holes in a heart: Dr P K Goel area of expertise

Device Closures of holes in a heart

Dr P K Goel, the Director of interventional cardiology at Medanta Hospital Lucknow and formerly the head of cardiology at SGPGIMS Lucknow, explains that device closure of the heart is used as an alternative to reparative surgery and can be accomplished through needle hole puncture in the groin as against opening the chest wall cage by surgery and is therefore much less invasive

Dr Pravin K Goels says that "A device closure device can help seal a hole in the heart. The device is placed in the heart during a procedure, which can be done with a catheter or during open-heart surgery"

He tells "The device can be made of a wireframe of nitinol (nickel and titanium) with a polyester fabric covering. The device can also include platinum."

"During the procedure, a catheter is inserted into the groin and guided to the heart. A mesh patch or plug is then passed through the catheter to close the hole. The device stays in place immediately after surgery because of the natural pressure in the heart. Over time, heart tissue grows around the device and it becomes a permanent part of the heart." he adds

He tells "After the procedure, patients are usually kept in the hospital for one or two days. Patients can usually resume their normal activities within one week after a transcatheter closure."

"Patients may need to limit physical activity for a few weeks after surgical ASD closure. They may also need to take medications to prevent blood clots for six months after the procedure." said the doctor
