Endovascular repair of Aortic aneurysm: Speciality of Dr P K Goel

Endovascular repair of Aortic aneurysm

Dr P K Goel, the Director of interventional cardiology at Medanta Hospital Lucknow and formerly the head of cardiology at SGPGIMS Lucknow, informs that the best method to repair an aneurysm depends upon several factors, including the location and shape of the aneurysm as well as the physical condition of the patient. Endovascular grafting is a minimally invasive method to treat an aortic aneurysm.

An Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) is a bulge in the wall of the aorta, the body's largest artery, that can be caused by a weak section in the artery wall. If it bursts, it can be deadly. During an EVAR procedure, Dr P K Goel shall:

  • Thread a catheter into a small puncture in your groin or arm
  • Feed the catheter through a blood vessel to the aneurysm
  • Place a fabric tube (endograft stent) inside the aneurysm
  • The stent relieves pressure on the aneurysm and prevents it from rupturing

Dr P K Goel says that "EVAR is a safe procedure with a high success rate. It can lead to less pain, improved outcomes, and faster healing than open surgery. Full recovery takes between 2 to 4 weeks after endovascular repair"
